Hello. Come join us for the fourth and final session of Semiotics of Death at Arhiiv, Tartu, this Thursday the 10th at 18.00. This week Ott Puumeister will talk about how mortality provides the definition of the individual, how the pursuit of immortality is also the pursuit the erasure of the individual, or as he puts it:

Health has replaced salvation, as we know. The only thing that matters is thus our non-diseased presence in the present. There is no longer any "beyond" toward which to strive, there is no other world in which to exist: we are no longer finite beings defined by infinity. Infinity offered us a very convenient concept of after-life of which we knew - and possibly could not know - nothing about, since we were radically transformed when entering the world beyond. We could not stay the same. What happens when there is no longer a world that would promise us infinite existence? What becomes of our possibilities of survival? Could we, perhaps, survive and continue to exist in the state of indefinite finitude, of a never-ending present in which we could always stay the same?

Semiotics of Death 3: Sex, death and perversion

Thursday, November 26th at Arhiiv, all are welcome to attend the third session of Semiosalong 2015, the semiotics of death. This week philosopher Francesco Orsi will talk to us about sex, death and perversion.

We are all quite familiar with so-called sexual perversions, whether thanks to literary, audiovisual, anthropological sources or on first-hand experience. But what is a necrological perversion, i.e. a perverted attitude towards death? Are the two perversions related, and how? And, finally, should we perhaps reject all such talk as based on some misconception? In this Semiosalong I will provide a tentative philosophical roadmap to approach these questions.

Does death exist? Is there a dividing line between life and death? Hard science doesn’t seem to give us the answer because it only tells us that we are each made up of numerous cells, some of which die each day. In a way we can say we’re in a constant process of dying and being born, but none of these cellular deaths prepare us for our actual deaths. Death remains a mystery, despite some efforts to personify it and others to convince us that we know exactly what the afterlife will be like. Death is the closest we can come to infinity, but since it ends existence, even becoming part of infinity does not mean we will ever understand it. In the meantime, we’ve each a finite existence to try wrapping our minds around it before going the way of the tree or mushroom.

Let the world around you fade. Best to leave the door open; there might be people coming late. Maybe they aren’t even people, but masses of cells continuously dying and being born, in which case, you might as well close the door, especially if they are masses of cells you don’t like, or cells that have never read poetry, run from a shadow, or gotten philosophical over poor Yorick’s skull. But you never know. Maybe some of them are people, after all, so leave the door open just to be sure...

666th Season: Semiotics of Death

Semiosalong is kicking off its sixth season. And as it is the Devil's number, the theme for this season is Semiotics of Death, curated by Tyler James Bennet from Tartu University.

The first seminar, titled Necrosemiotic Axiology and "All Souls Night", will be held by the curator himself this Thursday, October 29th 6 pm. The series takes place in Tartu at Arhiiv (Vanemuise 19, entry from courtyard) our gathering place from last year. All of the seminars will be held in English in order to introduce the international semiotics students to the Semiosalong tradition and create a multi-language discussion on occurring matters.

Semiosis is a key identifying feature of life. Wherever we find life, we find the creative negotiation of contradiction, the experience of meaning. But semiotics itself is not strictly interested in semiosis. It is also interested in mono semic, predictable systems found outside of biology. The borderland between the semiosic and the non semiosic is a liminal space peopled by fuzzy hybrids of great interest. What resides beyond is mere death. If semiosis defines life, it also puts in relief that which is beyond. There are two dimensions to the semiotics of death. In the first place, its interest is in those pseudo sign structures whose plurality has perished. How do signs cross this meaningful threshold, where translation ends and copying begins? How can such late structures be preserved, or even resurrected? In the second place, the semiotic study of more literal instances of death, by their untimely reminder of personal mortality, can illuminate the reality of the sub symbolic realm. The semiotics of death breathes life back into the recumbent subject.

Suvel andsime seminarisarja kogumiku välja, mille viimased eksemplarid on nüüdseks rariteetidena paaris kohas veel saadaval. Sügisest alustasime koostööd kahe uue kuraatoriga Tartus - Iiris Viirpalu ja Mirjam Parvega, kes ühendasid semiootikat näiliselt kaugemate erialadega nagu näiteks füüsika ning otsisid kokkupuutepunkte kirjanduslokaalis Arhiiv. Aitäh kõigile asjaosalistele!

Tallinnas sattus Semiosalongi seminarisari Eesti Humanitaarinstituudi antropoloogia bakalaureuseõppekava kohustuslikuks aineks, nii et Tallinna kuraatorid Piret Karro ja Kristin Orav sidusid semiootikat osalusvaatluse teemakatuse kaudu antropoloogiaga veinibaaris Paar Veini. Aitäh siingi lektoritele, baaripidajatele, meie ihudisainerile, publikule ja tublidele tudengitele, kes seminarides usinalt märkmeid kirjutasid!

Hooaeg lõppes toreda uudisega - nimelt otsustas Eesti Semiootika Selts pärast viieaastast tegutsemist premeerida korraldajat Piret Karrot aukirjaga "Semiootiline jälg".
Auhinna vastuvõtjana olen ESSile väga tänulik ning laiendan sära ja kiitust kõigile kaaslastele, kelleta see töö poleks tehtav olnud, eriti Semiosalongi teisele põhikuraatorile ja kogumiku väljaandjale Kristin Oravale.

Semiosalong alustab viiendat hooaega!

Semiosalongi seminarisari alustab uue hoo ja uute teemadega Tartus ja Tallinnas, laienedes distsiplinaarselt ja metodoloogiliselt.

Tartus tervitame uusi kuraatoreid Mirjam Parvet ja Iiris Viirpalu. Mirjam ja Iiris on lõpetanud semiootika bakalaureuse (2014) ning õpivad nüüd vastavalt tõlketeaduse ja semiootika magistrantuurides. Uute kuraatorite juhtimisel toimub Tartus kaheksa seminari, kus otsitakse semiootika sidusust esmapilgul valdkonnast kaugel tunduvate distsipliinidega.

Küllap on igaüht, kes kunagi varba väheke sügavamale semiootikasse kastnud, mõnikord vallanud ka antisemiootiline tung, igatsus jätta kõrged abstraktsioonid ja puudutada rohkem “päris maailma” ja “reaalset elu”. Sel hooajal proovib ka Semiosalong  tutvust sobitada selliste elu, ainet ja vaimu uurivate teadustega, millega semiootikaõppur ehk harvem kokku puutub. Sel aastal keskendub Semiosalong humanitaaria ning reaal- ja loodusteaduste seostele, kutsudes lektoriteks näiteks füüsikale ja bioloogiale pühendunud asjatundjaid. Kui ootuspäraselt tõdeme, et sealgi, “päris maailmaga” tegelevates “päris teadustes”, abstraktsioonidest, vahendatusest –  üleüldse, semioosist – ei pääse, saame ehk ringiga, rõõmuga ja värske pilguga tagasi jõuda oma koduse semiootika juurde. Asume uurima, millise mõõtme omandab märksõna “rakenduslik”, kui kohtuvad füüsika ja filosoofia aegruum või bioloogiline ja semiootiline evolutsioon.

Hooaja  avaüritusel 4. veebruaril astub üles biosemiootik Kalevi Kull, kes võtab vaatluse alla Eesti teooria – teema, millega tegeleti koos Marek Tammega Eesti Humanitaarinstituudi konverentsil ja millest valmis ühine artikkel.

Toimumispaigaks on meile juba tuttav Arhiiv (Vanemuise 19, sissepääs hoovist), salongid hakkavad aset leidma üle nädala kolmapäeviti kell 19 ning kulgevad riburadapidi 13. maini välja.

Semiosalong HIA6107. Osalusvaatlus

Tallinnas toimub tsükkel teemal OSALUSVAATLUS, mida kureerivad Piret Karro ja Kristin Orav. Semiosalong on sel semestril osa Eesti Humanitaarinstituudi antropoloogia õppekavast, olles ühendatud bakalaureusetaseme ainega “Uurimisteemasid antropoloogiateadustes” (ainekoodid HIA6107, HIA6108, HIA6109 ja HIA6110).

Otsime osalusvaatluse meetodi kaudu semiootika ja antropoloogia ühisosa ning kuulame, millist ainest on antropoloogidel oma välitööde kogemust kirjeldades pakkuda semiootikutele, kuidas rakendavad semiootikud osalusvaatlust oma töös ning mida antropoloogilist loetakse välja näiteks kodanikuaktivisti etnograafiast.

Koguneme lokaalis Paar Veini (Sauna 1) üle nädala kolmapäeviti kl 19. Toimub kaheksa seminari, kus õppejõud, antropoloogid ning praktikud toovad näiteid oma kogemustest.

Esimeses seminaris 4. veebruaril kl 19 astub üles EHI antropoloogiaõppejõud Carlo Cubero, kes näitab filmi “Mangrove Music” ning kõneleb Culebra saare muusikute identiteediloomest Kirde-Kariibidel. Filmi põhjal arutletakse adiovisuaalse meedia metodoloogilisi probleeme antropoloogilises uurimistöös. Seminar on inglise keeles!

Mõlemas linnas on seminaride ajal võimalik soetada Semiosalongi artiklikogumikku “Sõbralik semiootika: Semiosalongi tekste aastast 2011-2014”, mida on alles viimased eksemplarid (hind 12 €).
